A Strange Space is an open-air exhibition of site-responsive projection art, performance, music, dance and online interactive works by LGBTQIA+ artists and allies, presented within the Collingwood Yards courtyard, the Centre for Projection Art Studio and online.

Co-curated by Edwina Bartlem and Jacob Tolo for the Centre for Projection Art and the 2021 Midsumma Festival, the projection artworks and performances featured in this multi-arts program explore the theme of “A Strange Space” and the various forms, ideas and experiences that this concept evokes.

On the opposite sides of the ocean's horizon. Two people appear.
Unaware of each other. Standing still, quiet in their own worlds.

Their reflections shimmer in the sunlight.
 The sandy landscape evolves.

As their movements softly unfold,

They begin to gravitate towards one another.

Slowly their limbs make way across the landscape.
Their shadows and movements begin to sync.

Embracing as they finally meet.

This work aims to share a tender and vulnerable perspective on gender and sexual identity.
Discovering relationship to self is unique to everyone. As a queer woman, I often find myself being put in assumed heteronormative boxes.
My aim with this project is to tell a queer love story. Showing a complex relationship on screen that challenges the ideas of gender divisions.
